Chandelier Over Dining Room Table

Hang in There: How to Determine Chandelier Height

Choosing a chandelier for your space is a design decision that can transform the atmosphere of a room. However, beyond the style and size of the fixture, one crucial factor often goes overlooked—the height at which you hang it. Finding the perfect chandelier height can be the difference between a well-lit, harmonious space and a design faux pas. In this illuminating blog post, we'll take you through the steps to determine the best height for your chandelier, ensuring that your lighting is as elegant as it is functional.

1) Consider the Room's Function:

The first step in determining chandelier height is to consider the room's purpose. For dining rooms, hang the chandelier above the table, keeping it approximately 30 to 36 inches above the surface of the table. This ensures a warm and inviting glow during meals.

2) Account for Ceiling Height:

Ceiling height plays a significant role in chandelier height. In rooms with standard 8-foot ceilings, a chandelier should hang around 30 to 36 inches above the table. For higher ceilings, you can raise the chandelier slightly, but maintain a balance that keeps the light source within reach. Our suggestion is to increase the distance from your table by 3 inches for every foot above 8 feet. So on a 10-foot ceiling increase the distance to range from 36 to 42 inches above your dining room table.

3) Balance Over Other Areas:

In spaces like foyers or living rooms, where there is no table to guide you, consider the visual balance. Chandeliers should be high enough that they do not obstruct sightlines but low enough to create a cozy ambiance. A good tip for this is hang the chandelier is not lower than the top of the doors, this ensures that it is a good balance and a great starting point.

4) Use a Chain or Rod:

Chandeliers often come with adjustable chains or rods. These tools make it easy to adapt the chandelier's height. Experiment to find the perfect balance for your space.

5) Create a Focal Point:

In spaces with high ceilings, the chandelier can serve as a focal point. Hang it lower to draw the eye upwards and create a sense of intimacy. This helps the rooms feel more intimate while still feeling grand.
